About

Rapidly approaching their half centenary, Fußball-Club Neßsand, who have become Hamburg Fundament on joining the KIT LEAGUE, are a great example of the German second city’s individualism, calling the sand-based island on which they play home despite much disquiet over the viability of such a project.

In fact, once fortification of the Lower Elbe isle had taken place and the Neßsandstadion was built, the official club motto was written to poke fun at the naysayers, while the dual nicknames of “The Islanders” and “The Saxons” (the ground is actually, technically, in Saxony) actually create a distance from established Hamburg.

Despite this, there is much support from within the city. The novelty of the river crossing makes the trip desirable for away supporters too, meaning most matches are sellouts and that has no doubt played a part in the on-field success, particularly this century.
